Decks come in all different shapes, sizes and wood species, each requiring unique preparation and stain selection. From pressure treated pine to a domestic hardwood like cedar or an exotic hardwood decking like mahogany and ipe, selecting a compatible deck stain is critical for a beautiful, long lasting deck finish. We have plenty of experience with all types of deck surfaces and will help you select the correct stain and colors for you deck project.  Here in New England our decks, patios and porches get exposed to some very harsh weather conditions. Snow, rain, direct sunlight, wet leaves and the constant cold and hot weather cycles can quickly turn a nice looking deck into an eyesore if not properly stained and maintained. We take pride in transforming decks that have seen better days into an inviting space you are proud of.

Our Deck Staining Process

Deck Inspection. We will thoroughly inspect your deck for any rotten, splintered or loose boards and repair or replace accordingly. Any nails or screws that have come loose will be counter sunk.

Stripping old coatings.  In order to get the most durable, longest lasting deck finish, we always recommend removing any old stain or coatings on a deck prior to the application of a fresh coat. Unlike paint which is thick and designed to develop a film barrier when dried, deck stain is less viscous in consistency allowing it to absorb into the wood. Previous coatings of stain will act as a barrier if not removed and not allow the new stain to absorb into the wood; this absorption is what gives the stain its ability to “grip” the wood surface. Old deck coatings are removed by pressure washer and chemical deck stripper or by sanding the deck boards.

Deck Cleaning. It is very important to have the deck completely clean before applying a stain. Any debris or wood discoloration will show through the stain and could ruin an otherwise perfect looking job. Some deck wash, a scrub brush and a little elbow grease will remove any mold, mildew, algae or other contaminants on the deck surface. A deck brightener is then used to remove any graying, tannin and nail bleeds, restoring the wood to its original beauty. A few days are then required to allow the deck to completely dry before staining. Once the moisture content of the wood is below 12%, we can move on to staining.

Staining. Depending on what look you are going for there are many different types of stains to choose from. Whether it is a clear sealer, a semi-transparent, a solid color stain or a penetrating oil we will help you every step of the way to choose the right product that will make your deck look great. We only use the best deck stains such as Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck or Penofin on all of our projects.
